Console7
TL;DW: Console7 is the best Console yet, with anti-alias filtering and special saturation curves!
I don’t think I’ve ever made as big of a quality jump as I have with this Console. I’m seriously thinking about replacing my analog mixing board with this: that’s how nicely it sits and works and sounds. It’s all thanks to recent work with ultrasonic filtering, and a bunch of other stuff besides. If you don’t already know what Console is: it’s the Airwindows digital mix buss. You put the channel plugin on every channel, feeding directly (at unity gain) into the 2-buss where the buss plugin lives. It applies saturation and anti-saturation functions so that, for individual sounds, there is no change, but when there’s two signals interfering with each other, it makes the channels saturate easier if the buss’s ‘input impedance’ is fluctuating based on other signals coming in. You set it up, and then mix with gain trim controls or the controls on the plugins because to change the faders would violate the need for unity gain between the plugins.
That’s been the case for six previous versions of Console, and now it’s Console7. Here’s what’s new, that I didn’t have before.
Every stage of the Console system now runs ultrasonic filtering. Not ‘the Ultrasonic filter’, which is heavier in CPU and steeper: it’s a system designed and built for Console, optimised for use with Console. It’s a gentler, less phase-smeary version equivalent to the Isolator filter across the entire Console system, but set up backwards: the Channel plugins lead off with the steepest stage of filtering, causing highs to hit the saturation in a particular way. Then, on the Buss plugins, the remaining two stages use decreasing resonances, so the end result is as flat as Isolator’s fifth-order Butterworth filtering: but one stage runs before the processing, and one after. Doing this causes aliasing to be repeatedly removed at every step it might occur, rather than trying to whack it completely on input and then expecting the whole chain to be clean. You can still drop Ultrasonic in there, anyplace that you think needs extra attention… but this is actually better. Especially if you’re working at 192k (but it’s designed to be fantastic at 96k).
Every channel and the buss now gets a dedicated seed value for the dithering to the floating point buss. This might seem (and in fact is) a mighty subtle point, but it turned out to be fine to do at no cost to the CPU of the actual mix (it’s just a little extra getting done as each plugin loads). In a (real, though kind of theoretical) sense, that means every single channel produces its own dedicated noise for dithering, even though it’s just to the floating point buss. No previous Airwindows plugin has done this, but it worked so well that it’s now the new standard for how they’re built.
Every channel and the buss now has a dedicated saturation/anti-saturation algorithm that ONLY exists in Console7. It’s based off of a blend of Spiral, and Density, with the first instance of Spiral run as a ConsoleBuss algorithm, ever. They go to the trouble of blending between this new Spiral/antiSpiral sort of Console, and the Density-based one as seen in Console5 and PurestConsole, because doing this allowed a tweak in the way channels hit saturation, where the harmonics are generated in a balanced way, a smoother onset of saturation than I’ve ever had before in a plugin. Console7 channels saturate in an incredibly sweet, non-edgy way, and that’s before the ultrasonic filtering.
All the channel plugins now default to 0.772 on the gain control. That, not 1.0, is ‘unity gain’. Why? Because you can now push Console channels into the red in a special way. For the first time, the gain staging is flexible and tied to the Fader controls on the plugins (the Master control on the buss also does this in its own way, but that’s normally kept at 1.0). Unlike any previous Console, and opposite to what you get if you use the DAW faders, these channels saturate MORE as you push them, and saturate LESS if you pull them back. By the way the Density algorithm works, that means stuff tends to come forward as you nudge the gain up, and drop back into the soundstage if you pull the gain back. It opens up in a very literal way when you pull channels back, like some idealized analog console. What that means is, if you use these controls (they are smoothed for zero zipper noise) stuff will practically mix itself: the mix ought to fall into place more easily and quickly, plus if you’re whacking around the controls in some mad dubby way it ought to romp with you quite delightfully! They are simple 0-1 controls specifically to get you to set them by ear: there is no such thing as ‘dB’ with these, and even if there was, you’re adjusting the saturation curves so it’s completely down to what sounds right. I recommend using control surfaces to ride these Fader controls in the plugins: this is another way to get back to (automatable) analog console days.
All NEW. If you thought you liked Console already, you ain’t heard nothing yet! I really think this will work out for people, and I hope it’s delightful. It exists because Patreon has been there for me over the years and I didn’t have to stop doing my work and get a real job :D and so, thanks to that, you have Console7, free and open source. If you want to throw $50 a year towards me and my work, as if you were buying a perpetual license for this to use on all your machines, feel free to do so. I don’t think I’m topping this version of Console anytime soon, but I keep busy regardless and I’m sure I’ll find something to do :)
(original version before denormalization fix is at Console7First.zip(725k))
The wait is over!
So what your’re telling me Sir, is that you will NEVER STOP impressing me and will continue doing you!!
Oh and thanks for opening up sound to me in a way i can finally trust with my ears, and my eyes. The temp algorithms, the circle of fifths thing as well as all the talk about triangle waves (wich makes my subs clean up and shine) the talk about scaling the higher end so that the curves on the oscilloscope becomes “traversable” or letting the lowest harmonic be louder than the highest… all that has led to some massive speed improvements and real deep insights that drive my daily mixes!
Keep talking your talk and sharing your deepest theories, its really a blessing to me!
So I had a dream last night that console 7 was going to be released today. I nearly had a heart attack when I saw this:)! Console 6 is the backbone to all my mixes so I’m literally beyond excited to test this one out!!! Chris I can’t tell you what a profound impact your plugins has had on my mixes!!! Thank you for everything you do!!!!
“All NEW. If you thought you liked Console already, you ain’t heard nothing yet!” I’m 100% in agreement with this! It sounds incredible!!! And that’s just the first few minutes with c7 in a mix. Chris this is just wow!!!!
Hey, awesome plugin!
I was wondering what RMS or peak level should I feed into the channel plugins to get the normal intended amount of effect?
Thanks again.
Jon: literally doesn’t matter. It can do anything from soft to extremely slammed. Feed it anything you like, just not after midnight :)
Hi, this sounds really good!
should I put the console at the end of the chain or the beginning?
and the same question for the consolebuss, should it be before the buss compressor?
Crazy good. Craaaazy good!! I love it.
BiG Sur wont allow this to be installed due to suspected Malware, Any way to fix this?
@Giovanni: Press and hold the control key and Open the plugin file with any app (for me it was Brackets, which apparently accepts the VST format). Close the app again. Load the plugin in your DAW again.
What you want is to have opened the plugin file once outside of the DAW, which then lets you open it inside of your DAW, as it’s already been “manually approved” by you by control clicking to “force open” the file.
I’m not sure any of this makes sense, I hope it might help.
All the best
Very impressive Chris, Thanks for sharing!
Hi Chris, I’m new to your plugins, but they seem really good so far!
You mentioned on a recent video that Ardour lets you put plugins post-fader, and that’s a good way to use Console. I sometimes use Ardour, but more often Waveform, which allows that too. In fact, Waveform treats each track’s gain and pan controls as just another plugin, so you can remove them altogether. That would work really well, if the Console channel plugin had a pan control! You probably don’t want to mess with the simple design just for this edge case, but I just wonder whether you or other users have a better idea. (For example, is there a pan plugin that works somehow better than the default?)
The other question I had was how Console7Channel and Channel work together. Are they designed so that I should put Channel9 first on a channel, and Console7Channel last? I’m lost in the cornucopia of plugins, and I’ve typed the word “channel” so much now that it’s lost all meaning, help!
Wow! New to airwindows and holy cow I think I’m in love! Console7 sounds fantastic and is now a part of mix template. Nice job Chris
Hi Chris, compliments for your Great work, I need help to be able to try the console series plugin. I use win7 64bit SP1 with Cubase SX3 (32bit) and Reaper(64bit) without problems with many vst plugin (32 and 64 bit), including your Monitoring Redux and BusColour, but also following the istructions on your post and forum I don’t hear any differences between on and bypass. I have as monitor system Ultrasone proline 550, VRMbox as headphone amp, emu0404usb and iKMultimedia micromonitor together with iKMultimedia ARC for active correction.
The listening impression is confirmed by a null test comparing audio export file (multitrack mix 24 tracks, dry) with the same export mix with Console activated. Several tries with Console 5, Console 5Raw, Console7, PurestConsole2 without success. So I suppose there were some missing system files of Win7 or something else, all other users don’t have this problems. Thanks for your help, where I can read your answer, my email or you have a link for this ? Very impressed by MonitorinRedux and BusColour, CIAO
Hi Chris,
I just came across Air Windows and I’m really excited to dig in and try so many of them out. Console is of particular interest and while I understand that I should put the the channel plugin on the individual tracks and the buss on the output buss – generally I like to use multiple group busses for different instrument groups and then send all of those groups to a final output bus. Should I save the buss plugin for the final output buss? Or should I add the buss plugin to the to each of the group busses? OR…should the group busses than be treated with both a buss plugin and a channel plugin at the end of the chain and sent to the final output buss?
Thanks,
Jerry
Hi, the summing of this plugin is incredible! I’m using it on cubase and the difference on the final sound – the way the instruments interact with each other- is phenomenal. My question though is that there is a great loss of high frequencies from 6khz and up. Compared to the unprocessed session when using console on the drum buss, bass etc. – as a post-fader insert – the hihat for instance is muffled and I have to compensate with large a high self boost. Is this on the plugin? Is there a way to address this issue with a fix? Thank you very much for your work and effort!
Hi Chris!
How does this work with the freeze function in DAWs? Can I freeze the console 7 channel plugin with all the other plugins on a track and not break the interaction between the channel and the buss plugin?
Cheers!
I have a question on routing. Since Reaper does not have Post-Fader plugins, I process and then send every track into it’s own Console7Channel master track set to unity gain. The ‘stem’ tracks’ master outputs get muted and all the Console7Channel master tracks feed into the final 2-Bus, which has Console7Buss on it. Works like a charm so far.
However, I now want to group process (Bus, or as Reaper has it, Folder) especially the singular drum stem tracks. So this is what I’m forced to do if I am not mistaken (kick is just one example for individual drum stems):
Kick stem (mute master output) –> Kick console7 aux (mute master output) –> DRUM BUS –> Final 2-Bus/Master output.
Question: Since my master track/final 2-Bus has Console7Buss plugin on it for decoding, what do I put on the DRUM BUS folder track? Another instance of Console7Channel? Is it safe to rout several channels into another summing channel ere everything gets decoded by C7Buss top-down? Or do i have to put C7Buss on the DRUM BUS group channel already to make this work (and then put another instance of C7Channel at the end of the DRUM BUS chain before it hits the master 2-Bus?) ???
Help is much appreciated. Thanks for the astonishing work, Chris!
It sounds so good. but, keep crashing on logic pro x 10.5.1 running mac os catalina 10.15.7
Hey Chris, love the plugins. I use Console 7 on every song I make and even my masters from other artists. It sounds fantastic.
Something I’ve always wondered: what happens when you put a Console 7 channel plugin NOT last in the chain? Like if it there’s other plugins after it. Does it ignore them and send to the Buss?
Hi Chris! Salute to your good and hard work. I Recently implemented Console (Purestconsole2 and Console7) to my actual “Brauerized” workflow (sending individual mics to different busses and then summed at 2buss). It was quite hard work for me, because you don’t work that way, and internet somehow lacks information about your plugins in my style of mixing; but i did it: in a very expansive way. Coding individual mics with one version of ConsoleChannel into a Decoding ConsoleBuss from the same version inside a bus. I could use another console version to another buss and treat the same way; But the output of ALL my busses MUST be the same, because they are going to be summed at 2Buss. So, i output all the busses with the same version of a ConsoleChannel to be summed at the final stereo buss ConsoleBuss from that same last version. It works for me. It sounds good. I don’t know how you thought the use and behavior of that plugins, but i like what i hear. If it keeps working im going to be Patreon. Peace
