Pear2
TL;DW: Pear2 is my Pear filter plus nonlinearity.
Turns out I got more use out of Pear than anybody else… until now.
Pear (as a plugin) is real experimental. It’s got fixed cutoff points based on bit shifting, to see what that was like and whether it would maximize tone purity. Maybe it did (you’ve got it already so you’re free to check it out). It’s got a Poles control, but it’s not meant to be a sweepy synth filter, it was purely an experiment on things I could do with the Holt algorithm.
Turns out you can have a lot more fun with it when you turn it loose.
Pear2 doesn’t restrict the frequencies. In fact it smooths the control, specifically so you can sweep it. You can sweep everything except Poles: there’s a switch on that, but you get to add WAY more poles than before.
And then there’s the Nonlin control… and now it’s time to get gnarly.
This doesn’t have a distortion circuit! As filthy as it can get, none of that is from distortion or saturation. It’s purely from the same nonlinearity calculation present in Capacitor2, in BiquadNonlin, and so on. That is applied here to a completely different algorithm based on Holt, and the more poles you add to the gnarly brew, the weirder it gets. You can use this for a really vibey analog-style EQ (high or low shelf: I’ll be using it as a crossover) or you can push it until it’s making a sound that has not been heard before.
So if you liked weirdness like the Y series filters, this is your new toy. Back next week with…
…more.
Yeah, let’s just call it ‘more’ ;)

The next months will be a WIN! Pear2 is a WIN!
This is great, just up my alley, breaking the signal, thanks.
I wish you at least released both long double and double precision versions of each plugin. I love having both options. I mix with the double ones then swap my airwindows folder to the long doubles before rendering. It gives me maximum amount of awesomeness.
Another experimental Airwindows plugin? Well, I should really be improving my orchestral mockup skills, but hey, you always do the most interesting things, Chris. A filter with fixed cutoff points based on bitshifting? Did you just invent a whole new filter type and is it called Bitshiftyshev? If you’re taking requests, a basic reverse delay plugin. There’s one in a commercial amp plugin, what a fantastic and overlooked ambient effect , but it would be nice to have a smaller low CPU-version of that. Reversed pulsing waves of pianos with heavy dose of Halactic, sonic goodness!
Btw, I’ve been reading studies of the various ancient pre-Lonnrot folklore versions of Kalevala. Lots of different versions. I read some even interpret the Sampo as describing some real misunderstood ancient machine? Well, maybe it was an ancient music workstation! Although it’s often said to have made money, so maybe not! :D
So excited to learn about ‘distorted air’! My antique MacBook from 2013 sees mostly your plugins. So happy to hear your sound (!) thoughts on catering for the needs of all of us using older gear. Your plugins are the best. As an aside, you voice really sounds great as of lately!
Let me expound upon my previous comment above. The removal of a chunk of signal, can simulate a gating effect if applied to the rythmn section as in drums and bass combined.
* Not about this release, question:
Is there any place to post opinions, requests for these products?
I didn’t find forums with active threads…
Matt – you can go to youtube comments and do it. He responds sometimes and also has done some of the requests. BitShiftPan is one of the requests that he did fulfill.
this thing sounds great
Chris, are you okay? Do you release a plugin every week but not this week?
